Salaamun 'Alaykum

The following questions were kindly answered by Shaykh Hasnain.

Fee Amaanillah,

Akil Karim
Moderator - 'Aalim Network

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

Shaykh Hasnain: Ramadan Mubarak. May this holy month bring about peace,
love, affection, prosperity and enhancement in spirituality for all Muslims.

Questioner: I must apologize for my total ignorance of Shi'ism. Forgive me
for asking some very naive questions. I am not a scholar nor can I claim
having any knowledge of Islam except some basic for my personal daily
practice. My ancestors are followers of Shafi'i and as a natural course of
event I am also basing my religious practice on Shafi'i guideline.

Shaykh Hasnain: You are most welcome to ask any question so as to know or
clarify an issue on Shi'ah Islam. It is best to ask rather than make
judgements or conjectures, for "surely conjectures in some cases is a sin"
(Qur'an, 49:12). Very few of us acquire the tawfiq (success) to ask for
things we do not know. Imam 'Ali in an advice says, "No one should feel
ashamed of saying 'I do not know' when he is asked a matter which he does
not know, [nor] should one feel ashamed of learning a thing that he does not
know" (Nahjul Balagha, Saying #82). Please accept our apologies for the
delay in responding to your questions. Our responses are interspersed
between your messages.

QUESTION 1:

Could you please tell me if the four Mazhabs which are most familiar to me
by name - Shafi'i , Hambali, Maliki and Hanafi- are acknowledging the
practice of Shiaism as a true Islamic principles or otherwise. Please quote
me their statements in relation to this.

ANSWER 1:

I have not seen an official pronouncement from each of the four above
madhahib (schools of jurisprudence) which acknowledge the practices of the
Shi'ah Ithna 'Ashari sect who follow the madhab of Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq. On
the contrary I have come across readings of some extreme elements within
Sunni Muslims which condemn the practices of other Sunni madhahib as well as
the Ja`fari madhhab. However, on several occasions scholars have emerged in
Egypt, Iraq and Iran who have put great efforts in bringing closer the
different schools of jurisprudence and thought in Islam. In 1959, for
instance, Shaykh Mahmud Shaltut, the then head of Al-Azhar at Cairo, in a
religious ordinance recognized the Shi`ah Ithna 'Ashari school as an
acceptable school in Islam. Currently an international journal RISALAT
AL-TAQRIB appears quarterly from Tehran. The aim of the journal is to
address "matters concerning the proximity of Islamic schools of Thought and
Law." The last issue which I have seen is Vol. 14, No. 4 dated Shawwal-Dhil
Hijjah, 1417.

QUESTION 2:

What is Shia stand on the Mazhabs of Shafi'i, Hambali, Maliki and Hanafi.

ANSWER 2:

The four Imams of the above sects Muhammad al-Shafi`, Ahmad ibn Hanbal,
Malik bin Anas and Abu Hanifa, respectively, were mujtahids (jurists) of
their times in their own capacities. A Sunni Muslim who acts on one of the
four jurists is considered to have fulfilled the religious requirements
according to his sect. The shi`ahs do not consider the acts of worships
(`ibadat) of a Sunni following his own Imam of jurisprudence as invalid. On
the contrary the Shi`ahs are supposed to administer funeral rites to a Sunni
corpse according to the ahkam of the dead person's sect. Thus, the Shi`ah
recognise the fiqh of the above four schools for the followers of these
schools.

A Shi`ah, however, is supposed to act on the ahkam (jurisprudential rules)
derived by a learned jurist (mujtahid) from the Qur'an, hadith and the
sunnah of the Prophet and the twelve Imams, rational principles (`aql) and
consensus (ijma`) of scholars in the field. The process of following on the
opinion of a Mujtahid is known as taqlid. A Shi'ah is usually required to do
taqlid of one mujtahid at a particular time on most issues related to the
acts of worship ('ibadat) and dealings (mu`amalat). He cannot follow the
opinions of other mujtahids. Therefore, a Shi'ah cannot only follow on the
opinions of the four Imams of Sunni schools of fiqh but also not the opinion
of other Shi`ah mujtahids whose taqlid he/she is not doing.

QUESTION 3:

Is your Quran identical to the last word to the Quran being used by the
four Mazhabs. This Quran is universally used in Makkah and Madinah and all
the Muslim worlds I have visited. ( I have not been to Iran yet. Inshallah I
will.). Often it is being quoted by some of the FOLLOWERS (emphasis
FOLLOWERS) the Quran used by the Shia has an additional Chapter than the
Quran used by the four Mazhabs. How did this happen historically?

ANSWER 3:

Al-hamdu lil... we use the same Qur'an which other Muslims use. You will be
surprised to learn that majority of our centers, madrasahs and homes receive
the copies of Holy Qur'an for their daily use from Sunni publishers &
distributors. Shia pilgrims who return from Hajj and `Umrah invariably bring
with them copies of Qur'an purchased from the markets of Makkah and Madinah.
As I am writing this message, I am listening to the holy Qur'an CD produced
by Dar al-Hidayah of Jeddah. The recitation of Suratul Asraa by Shaykh
al-Sudays and Shaykh al-Shuraym is beautiful and clear. The only concern I
have with some of the CDs from Saudi Arabia is that they have dropped the
saying of Basmalah before beginning the recitation of all surahs except
Al-Fatiha!

As for our belief concerning the authenticity and genuineness of one Holy
Qur'an with all Muslims one can refer to numerous books on this issue by our
past and present scholars. Suffice for me to quote a contemporary Grand
Jurist of the Shiah late Ayatul... Sayyid Abul Qasim al-Khu'i (d.1992). In
his book "Al Bayan fi Tafseer al-Qur'an" after quoting views of a number
great Shi'i scholars on the authenticity of the Qur'an, al-Khu'i writes, "To
sum up, the general belief of Shiah ulema has been that the Qur'an is intact
and pristine. Of course there has been a small group of traditionalists,
both among Shiahs and Sunnis who held that the Quran has been tampered with"
(The Collection & Preservation of Qur'an, tr. of two chapters from
Al-Khu'i's Al Bayan fi Tafseer al-Qur'an, Stanmore, 1987, p.14).

QUESTION 4:

Could you please tell me the relationship of Kerbala and the Shia.

ANSWER 4:

The tragedy of Kerbala refers to the brutal massacre in AH 61/680 CE of the
second grandson of the Holy Prophet, Imam Abu 'Abdillah al-Husayn b. 'Ali b.
Abi Talib, with his friends, helpers and family members. This unprecedented
tragedy in the history of Islam at the orders of Umayyad ruler Yazib b.
Mu`awiyah b. Abi Sufyan has never been forgotten by the followers of the
Ahlul Bayt, the household of Prophet Muhammad (s). Every year in the months
of Muharram and Safar we remind ourselves of this heart breaking tragedy by
recalling the historical events as well as the great teachings of Islam as
found in the Qur'an and Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet (s). We use
interpretations and practices of the Imams from the Prophet's household to
learn about the importance of holding steadfastly to Islamic values under
all circumstances, at all times and in all places. These reminders take
place in the form of maw`idah (admonitions and advices) in gatherings
(majalis) held at our centers known as Husayniyyahs.

QUESTION 5:

There are some practices of Shia being published in printed paper with
regards to some 'Shiah' slicing their bodies with razors blades on the
occasions of the death of Ali and Hussain. Is this an accepted form
sacrifice on the part of Shiah followers in general?

ANSWER 5:

The tragedy of Kerbala, as mentioned above, cannot be forgotten by us. It
has left a great impact on the consciousness of our people. People express
their grief, shock and mourning in different ways. Our jurists (mujtahidun)
have permitted this practice provided it is done to express our true love
for the Ahlul Bayt (a) symbolically and not as a sign of self destruction.
Some people are not only grieved when they hear about the provocative
destruction of the members of the Prophet's family, but they become angry
and sometimes filled with rage. Therefore they are seen grieving and weeping
in ways which are difficult for both the friends and
foes to comprehend.

This depicts various levels of love and reverence for the members of the
Prophet's family. In the process, however, some extreme actions (e.g.
slicing heads with razor blades) are also seen amongst some of the Shi'ahs.
This has never been the practice of the bulk of Shi'ahs nor is it condoned
universally. Moreover, it should be noted that remembrance of Kerbala
despite being an important part of our rituals has never been made
obligatory like Salat, Sawm and Hajj. It is the individual commitment to the
teachings and practices of the Ahlul Bayt which determines a person's
participation in the mourning for the Ahlul Bayt. My experience shows that
some born shi'ahs as well as converts, who are initially opposed to the
rites of lamentations for al-Husayn suddenly are seen as active
participants. When you ask them about the change, they say that the great
sacrifice of Imam Husayn in Kerbala is far above the comprehension of an
ordinary Shi'ah. God knows the best.

QUESTION 6:

Are there many forms or sub groups or Mazhabs among the Shia. Could you
please name me the groups. Among these which are the groups or Mazhabs
generally recognized by majority of the Scholars of Shiah are genuine and
conforming to the Quran. Any of the groups considered to be deviating from
the Quran and the words of our Prophet S.A.A.H.W.S.

ANSWER 6:

Three main groups are identified as Shi'ahs. These are Ithnaa 'Asharis,
Isma`ilis and Zaydis. The Ithna 'Asharis (followers of twelve Imams) form
the bulk of the Shi'ahs, numbering between 150 to 200 million. It is the
state religion in Iran. Besides this they are found in Iraq, Lebanon,
Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and some central Asian
countries. Organised communities of Shi'ah Ithnaa `Asharis can also be found
in East Africa, Europe and North America. Zaydis are prominent in Yemen,
whilst the Isma`ilis are found in Pakistan, India and North America. They
also have communities in East Africa.

`Allamah Tabatab'i writes, "the Isma`ilis have a philosophy in many ways
similar to that of Sabaeans (star worshippers) combined with elements of
Hindu gnosis" (Shi`a, S.M. Tabatab'i, p.79). A branch of Isma`ilis by the
name Nizaris or Agha Khanis do not give due importance to the Qur'an, salat,
sawm and hajj. The Zaydis are the followers of Zayd the son of Imam `Ali
Zaynul `Abdieen. Zayd was martyred in AH 121/737 CE when he rebelled against
the Umayyad caliph Hisham b. `Abd al-Malik. Regarding their belief,
Tabataba'i writes that "in the principles of Islam (usul) they follow a path
close to that of Mu`tazilies, while . . . in law (furu`) they apply the
jurisprudence of Abu Hanifah: (ibdi.,p.77).

QUESTION 7:

Do Shia recognize the Hadis collected and verified by the four Mazhabs I
mentioned above?. Could you please give me some examples of the Hadis
compiled by the four but not recognized by the scholars of Shia and vice versa.

ANSWER 7:

If a hadith can pass the test of its authenticity for the reliability of its
narrator and the veracity of its text, it will be accepted a Shi'ah
scholars. Their appearance in a particular book does not make it acceptable.
Therefore, hadiths found in the sahih sitta need to go through the test of
veracity before being accepted by our scholars.

QUESTION 8:

In your opinion is there any possibility to bring together the followers of
the four Mazhabs and others related mazhabs and the followers of Shia to
RECOGNIZE each other as true Brothers and Sisters of Islam. The historical
events that leads to the split of the Muslims groups and evaluation of the
Mazhabs has long past in history. As it is now, what are the issues that are
still the cause of the separations of the groups.

ANSWER 8:

If we were to go by history it seems unlikely that all Muslims will unite as
one single ummah recognising each other as true Muslim brothers and sisters
and be tolerant to each other's belief and practices. This is because harms
done by Muslims against the lives, wealth and integrity of fellow Muslims
over centuries is so significant that the followers find it difficult to
overlook the clear defiance of Islamic tenets at the hands of other Muslims.
However, each Muslim can surely work to understand each other, respect the
life, wealth and integrity of each other and avoid things which light the
flames of discord.

May the Almighty help us to treat fellow Muslims according to the great
teachings of the Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad (s).

Only God knows best.

Humble servant of the Ahlul Bayt(a)

Duties of Shias towards Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) *

To organize gatherings where the Fazael of Imam (a.t.f.s.) shall be discussed

The important duty is to organize programmes Where the Fazael of Imam (a.s.) are narrated. Where people will pray for Imam (a.s.). Even if one has to work very hard to organize such gatherings it is highly recommended because it is the propagation of the religion of Allah, it is the promotion of the word of Allah, it is a help in goodness in piety and it is a help to the signs of Allah and the friends of Allah. Tradition (hadith) clearly proves the importance of this duty of Imam Sadiq (a.s.).

"Meet each other because it enlivens your hearts and causes the remembrance of our affair (Wilayat), and our traditions will promote love amongst you. That if you take them you are successful and achieve salvation and if you leave them you shall be misguided and fall into perdition. Act on these traditions and I guarantee your salvation."

* To stand up with respect at the mention of Imam'(a.t.f.s) name

Whenever one utters the name or title of Imam (a.t.f.s.) one should stand up in respect, as had been the practice of the Twelver Shias. The textual proof can be cited from the report regarding Imam Sadiq (a.s.) as quoted in the book Najmus Saaqib. The report says that one day the name of Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) was mentioned in gathering of Imam Sadiq (a.s.). When the name was uttered, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) stood up in respect. (Beharul Anwar Vol. 44 Pg. 278)

That standing up in respect is recommended (Mustahab) is proved from this above tradition, but there are some occasions when it is obligatory to do so. For example, when the name of Imam (a.t.f.s.) is uttered and all the people stand up. Anyone who continues to sit without any valid excuse has disrespected Imam (a.t.f.s.). And there is no doubt that disrespect towards Imam (a.t.f.s.) is haraam.

Aayat al-Kursi 2:255- 7

2.255: Allah is He besides Whom there is no god, the Everliving, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist; slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His; who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot comprehend anything out of His knowledge except what He pleases, His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of them both tires Him not, and He is the Most High, the Great.

2.256: There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the Shaitan and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

2.257: Allah is the guardian of those who believe. He brings them out of the darkness into the light; and (as to) those who disbelieve, their guardians are Shaitans who take them out of the light into the darkness; they are the inmates of the fire, in it they shall abide.

“ Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Prophet, O you who believe! send your blessings on him, and solute him a thorough salutation”. Quran (33:56)

One of the best ways to know the personality of great men is to study their literature and listen to their words.

As Imam Ali (as) states in Nahjul-Balagha:

"Man is hidden behind his tongue” meaning by our words we introduce ourselves not with our certificates.

47 - Muhammad [MUHAMMAD] -_- Verse 28

Am hasiba allatheena fee quloobihim maradun an lan yukhrija Allahu adghanahum

That is because they follow what is displeasing to Allah and are averse to His pleasure, therefore He has made null their deeds.

Have you not considered those who attribute purity to themselves? Nay, Allah purifies whom He pleases; and they shall not be wronged the husk of a date stone.

[Muhammad (47), 36]

The life of this world is only idle sport and play, and if you believe and guard (against evil) He will give you your rewards, and will not ask of you your possessions.

Message of Islam

Imam Hussain ibn Ali (A.S.): "Those who worship Allah for the hope of gaining, they're not real worshippers, they are merchants. Those who worship Allah out of fear ( of punishment ), they are slaves. And those who worship Allah to be grateful towards their creator, they are the free people, and their worship is a real one."

11th Zee al-Qa'adah the Auspicious Birthday Anniversary of Imam Reza (A.S.)

_

The seven heavens declare His glory and the earth (too), and those who are in them; and there is not a single thing but glorifies Him with His praise, but you do not understand their glorification; surely He is Forbearing, Forgiving.
[The Children of Israel (17), 44]

Imam Ali ibn Musa al -Ridha (as) stated; May Allah take pity and be mericiful to the servant who resurrects and revives our affair, so I asked "And how is it that your affair gets revived?" He responded", By learning our knowledge & teaching it to the people. (WASAAIL AS-SHIA, Vol 18, P 102)

11th Zee al-Qa'adah the Auspicious Birthday Anniversary of Imam Reza (A.S.)

.....

O assembly of jinn and men! did there not come to you apostles from among you, relating to you My communications and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours? They shall say: We bear witness against ourselves; and this world's life deceived them, and they shall bear witness against their own souls that they were unbelievers.
[The Cattle (6), 130]

Hearts on that day shall palpitate,

Their eyes cast down.
[The Draggers (79), 8-9]

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said: "Verily everything is intimidated by a believer because the religion of Allah causes him to be powerful, and he is not intimidated by anything, which is the characteristic of any believer." - Biharul Anwar, vol. 67, p. 30

Imam Khomeini wrote that, "…the inward being of the impatient person is full of anxiety and alarm. His heart is full of tremors and shaky, and this is itself the greatest calamity that can befall a human being and deprive him of peace."

'A free human being is free in all circumstances. Should a misfortune befall him he bears it with patience (sabr). If calamities strike him, they don't shatter him.'

Do not force your children to behave like you, for surely they have been created for a time which is different to your time.

The Imam of Scholars and Knowledge : Imam Sadiq (AS)

As far as the knowledge of the Imams of Ahlul Bayt is concerned, it is sufficient to say that Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) was the teacher of the two Sunni Imams, i.e., Abu Hanifa al-Numan and Malik Ibn Anas. Abu Hanifa al-Numan said: "Except for the two years Numan would have starved," referring to the two years he had benefited from the knowledge of Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS). Although Abu Hanifa al-Numan did not become a Jafri, he learned the various religious sciences in these two years.

Malik Ibn Anas also confessed straightforwardly that he had not met anyone learned in Islamic Jurisprudence better than Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS).

"Abu Hanifa al-Numan! People have become so infatuated with Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) and placed him far too highly in their esteem. Therefore, I want you to prepare some very difficult questions which you will put to him in my presence and in front of other scholars." These were the instructions given to Abu Hanifa al-Numan by Al-Mansur the second Abbasid Caliph. Much as he loved Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) and respected his scholarly achievement, Abu Hanifa al-Numan had no choice but to comply with the Caliph's request.

Therefore, he prepared 40 such questions and waited for a call from the Caliph, which soon arrived. He went to him to find Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) sitting with him as well as many other people. As he looked at Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS), he was in awe of him much more than of the Caliph. Al-Mansoor asked Abu Hanifa al-Numan to put his questions to Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) and he did, one by one. He answered all questions in detail.

Needless to say, these were questions on issues subject to much controversy among scholars. Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) said in his answer to each question, as reported by Abu Hanifa al-Numan: "You, i.e. the scholars of Iraq, say so and so, but the scholars of Madinah say such and such, while our own view is the following. He may agree with us or with the scholars of Madinah or may disagree with us all, elucidating his own opinion. None of the 40 questions represented any difficulty for him."

Such was the standing of Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) whom Abu Hanifa al-Numan describes as the 'most learned scholar I have ever seen.' This is in line with Abu Hanifa al-Numan's criterion which states: "The most learned scholar is the one who knows best the differences among scholars."

Allah: Arabic name for God, Allah the most Merciful, Allah the Creator and Lord of the Universe

Allah is the standard Arabic name for "God". The term is best known in the west for its use by Muslims as a reference to God. Arabic-speakers of all faiths, including Christians and Jews, use the word Allah to mean "God". The Muslim and Christian Arabs of today have no other word for "God" than Allah.

In Islam, Allah is the only deity, transcendent creator of the universe, and the judge of humankind. Some Islamic scholars feel that "Allah" should not be translated, because they perceive the Arabic word to express the uniqueness of "Allah" more accurately than the word "god" for two reasons:

1. The word "god" can take a plural form "gods", whereas the word "Allah" has no plural form.

2. The word "god" can have gender as male god or female god (called goddess) whereas the word "Allah" does not have gender.

Tawhid (Tawheed, Tauheed) is the Islamic concept of monotheism (Oneness of God). In Islam, Tawhid means to assert the unity of Allah. The opposite of Tawhid is Shirk, which means "division" in Arabic, referring to idolatry.

Shaykh Saduq, one of the most distinguished of Shi'a scholars expressed: "Verily, God is One, Unique, nothing is like Him, He is Eternal; Hearing, Seeing, Omniscient, Living, Omnipotent, above every need. He cannot be described in terms of substance, nor body, nor form, nor accident, nor line, nor surface, nor heaviness, nor lightness, nor color, nor movement, nor rest, nor time, nor space. He is above all the descriptions which can be applied to His creatures. He is away from both extremes: Neither He is just a non-entity (as atheists and in a lesser degree Mutazilites implied), nor He is just like other things. He is Existent, not like other existing things."

Shi'a do not believe that God can or will ever be seen, and also reject the notion of Him having body parts, or any parts whatsoever.

In a new study, Vander Hoven, a psychologist from Netherlands, discovered the effect of reading the Noble Qur'an and repeating the word ALLAH both on patients and on normal persons.

The Dutch professor confirms his discovery with studies and research applied on many patients over a period of three years. Some of his patients were non-Muslims, others don't speak Arabic and were trained to pronounce the word "Allah" clearly; their result was great, especially on those who suffer from dejection and tension.

Al-Watan, a Saudi daily has reported that the psychologist was quoted to say that Muslims who can read Arabic and who read the Noble Qur'an regularly are enjoying a great chance of protecting themselves from psychological diseases. The psychologist explained how each letter in the word "Allah" affects healing of psychological diseases. Vander Hoven pointed out in his research that pronouncing the first letter in the word "Allah" which is the letter (A), released from the respiratory system, controls breathing. He added that pronouncing the velar consonant (L) in the Arabic way, with the tongue touching slightly the upper part of the jaw producing a short pause and then repeating the same pause constantly, relaxes the aspiration. Also, pronouncing the last letter which is the letter (H) makes a contact between the lungs and the heart and so this contact controls the heartbeat.

What is exciting about this study is that this psychologist is a non-Muslim, but interested in Islamic sciences and searching for the secrets of the Noble Qur'an.

Allah (SWT), The Great and Glorious, says in the Noble Qur'an: "We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe and in their own souls, until it will become quite clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord that He is a witness over all things?" (41:53)

"ALLAHU AKBAR [Allah (SWT) is great], Allah (SWT) keeps me going day and night. Without Allah (SWT), I am no one. But with Allah (SWT), I can do everything. Allah (SWT) is my strength."

Deviation from Religion

Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) was asked which is the minimum deviation from religion. Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) replied, ‘When man does not know whose obedience Allah has made obligatory and whose guardianship He has made binding upon the people and who He has appointed on the earth as His Proof and as a Witness upon His creatures. Then the narrator asked – Who are they O Ameerul Momineen (a.s.)? He (a.s.) replied – They are those who Allah has associated with Himself and His Prophet. Then he (a.s.) recited the verse - O you who believe! obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those in authority from among you…’ (Nisa: 59)

Remembering Death

Death. Excessive usage of this word, along with "the angel of death", "heaven", "hell", "judgement", and "recompense" will most probably score us a one-way ticket to the local psychiatric institute, compliments of our friends and family. Because death seems like such a horrible topic to discuss with the potential of mentally traumatizing people, many of us wonder what the logic is behind the Holy Qur'an and a vast majority of our scholars constantly reminding us about death. Isn't our religion supposed to give us peace of mind instead of sending shivers down our spine? To understand why Islam places such a great emphasis on remembering death we must first briefly understand what death is.

Medically speaking, it's the time when our hearts stop beating and can no longer support all our organs. It's the time when the body literally switches off and says goodbye to this world. We stop living; there's no more waking up every morning, spending time with family, going to work, and having fun. From the philosophical point of view and the view of the Abrahamic faiths, death is the time when the soul departs from the body. It's the time when God says "time's up", and our test in this world is finally over. It's when we officially embark on the journey to the next world in order to return to the One who gave us life. "How do you deny Allah, and you were dead and He gave you life? Again He will cause you to die and again bring you to life, then you shall be brought back to Him." (2:28)

Almost every day we hear tragic news reports about deaths which have occurred due to freak accidents, murders, old age, illness, or numerous other natural causes. We say: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return" (2:156), but let's face it, how many of us actually wholeheartedly believe that we are going to return to our Lord? While we appear to formally acknowledge death, we have become somewhat immune to this reality, and instead, we subconsciously believe that we are eternal beings.

The reason why we are encouraged to be steadfast in the remembrance of our death is because it is directly related with our fear of Allah, and remembering that there is an afterlife reinforces the idea that we are mortal beings. On the spectrum of Muslims who falter when it comes to remembering death, we have two main categories: 1) Those who completely disregard the laws of Halal and Haram as defined by Islam, and 2) those who do follow most of the Islamic laws, yet stumble when it comes to "perfecting" our Islamic practice and etiquette.

The first group of people knowingly and openly commit forbidden acts, while having little if any concern for obeying the commands of Allah. The main reason for such Muslims is that they are surrounded by drugs, alcohol, cheating, gambling, illegitimate relationships, disrespecting parents, and broken families in the society we live in, and they decide to jump on the bandwagon.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) has said: "He who sells his next life for his present life in this world loses both of them."

As described by our Imam, this first group of people "sell" their next life by completely detaching themselves from the reality that they will be held accountable for what they do. The Holy Qur'an has warned us against being misled by the societies we live in: "Let not the strutting about of the Unbelievers through the land deceive you. Little is it for enjoyment: Their ultimate abode is Hell. What an evil bed (to lie on)!" (3:196-197)

The second group of people are those who make up the majority of the Muslim population. We're the children who eat Halal food but lie to our parents. We're the teenagers who pray on time, but when we're around friends, we skip all religious activities and loosen up on both social and physical forms of Hijab. We're the adults who posses a wide range of religious knowledge and attend mosque every week, yet would rather pay for a holiday halfway across the world when Hajj is still obligatory on us. We're the parents who raise our children saying, "Everything you do must be to seek nearness to Allah", but when it comes to their marriages, we consider superficial things such as wealth and status to be superior to piety and religious practice of their spouses. We're the grandparents who always gave our grandchildren religious classes, but while celebrating their weddings, we'll figure out some way to commit Haram in the name of "fun".

In this second category of believers, the reason why we fulfill most obligatory acts yet are not concerned with doing complete justice to our faith is because we are not entirely fearful of death and Allah. We think, "Oh, it's not that bad...it's not as though we do Haram every day." We forget the saying of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny): "Do not look at the minuteness of the sin; rather, look Whom you have sinned against."

So now that we've acknowledged how forgetfulness of death causes us to indulge in the temporary and forbidden pleasures of this world, it's essential for us to bear death in mind in order for us to remain fearful of Allah and to become better people.

Some may find this a bit peculiar, and others may label this as slightly psychotic. However, consider the following practices: sitting in an empty grave for 5 minutes; visiting graveyards; looking at photographs of deceased loved ones; reading the verse of the Holy Qur'an which speak of death; and visiting a dying person. In essence, putting ourselves in such mental and physical environments which remind us of death can be extremely beneficial towards redefining our goals and purpose in this world. It is narrated that as he grew older, one of the four special deputies of the Twelfth Imam (may Allah hasten his reappearance) would sit in a grave and recite one-thirtieth of the Holy Qur'an every single day!

A popular company once arranged for a compulsory mock funeral for all of its employees, in which the friends and families of the "deceased" person were invited to mourn over his/her mock death. Data collected from the mock funeral participants indicated that the employees had become much more determined people which, as a result, profited the company. The families and friends of the employees also disclosed that the mock funeral had transformed their loved ones into much more forgiving, caring, and sincere people, who were concerned about how much good they could do to this world before they died. The employees achieved all this simply because they were reminded of their deaths.

In our capitalist, materialistic society, everyone is concerned with investments and future returns. People have become so absorbed with planning ahead that it's quite normal to find grandparents planning for the education of their unborn grandchildren. So it makes absolutely no sense that we knowingly fail to pre-plan our position in the afterlife, and that we pretend we will be able to escape death and will not have to recompense for our deeds in this world. Remembrance of death will help us fear our Lord. And fearing our Lord will ultimately help us attain heaven in the afterlife: "…for those who fear their Lord are Gardens with rivers flowing beneath; therein are they to dwell (forever), a gift from the presence of Allah; and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous." (3:198)

When Allah will say: O Isa son of Marium! Remember My favor on you and on your mother, when I strengthened you I with the holy Spirit, you spoke to the people in the cradle and I when of old age, and when I taught you the Book and the wisdom and the Taurat and the Injeel; and when you determined out of clay a thing like the form of a bird by My permission, then you breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission, and you healed the blind and the leprous by My permission; and when you brought forth the dead by My permission; and when I withheld the children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear arguments, but those who disbelieved among them said: This is nothing but clear enchantment.
